Parachute

Ingrid Michealson

Ain't she lovely? Ingrid Michealson is an Indie Folk singer-songwriter from New York, USA. She was born from artistic parents: her father is a composer and her mother is a sculptor. She became known through Grey's Anatomy since the series have used many of her songs in some of its episodes. Like Angela Aki, Ingrid's most notable feature is her eyeglasses which suits her well, btw.

There is a particular song that I like that was just recently released. Through knowing the song, I actually was able to identify what I prefer when it comes to music from today's mainstream industry.

Cheryl Cole's video is most likely the typical mainstream video for a pop music release. You can tell by her strong sexy image that this song is meant to sell. This is typically a manufactured pop star should be (not in a bad way). The video (although incoherent from the song's concept) is well-choreographed and nicely performed. The video's production is superb and the visuals are very appealing. I actually like the song: the tune and the lyrics are my cup of tea. It makes sense and it's catchy, though I have to say the whole package is not my type. But then, I made another discovery.

Ingrid Michaelson released her latest digital single. I actually did not recognize Ingrid. She didn't have her signature geeky glasses and she has a different hairstyle. Like others say, when Ingrid removes her glasses, she becomes Penelope Cruz. lol Anyway, Ingrid Michealson's video is actually  more creative than Cheryl Cole's video. It is somewhat inspired by the novel The Little Prince: Ingrid tried to save the little planet and its plant. Though the video has a good concept, I think the production did not accomplish to make it visually appealing. On the other hand, this is a digital single and not a major release, so it is understandable.

No, Ingrid's Parachute is not a cover. She wrote the song together with Marshal Altman for the UK Pop Star, Cheryl Cole. Ingrid felt that the song is not really her usual sound since it is "so poppy" and somehow felt that she can't release it herself. She released the song, however, in a different sound. The song is her usual Indie Folk style which is funkier and it clearly contrasts with Cheryl Cole's heavy sexy techno-pop style.

In the end, I actually prefer Ingrid's version of Parachute. Well, in my opinion, I love the raw sound she produced and performed. It's not digitally enhanced and perhaps I am kinda biased. Cheryl's version is not bad either, but I prefer Ingrid's version since it gave the song a new light. Ingrid's Parachute is not usually the people's choice, but what can I say? I just love Ingrid and her music. :)
