My Girlfriend is a Cyborg

Eat some bone.
NOTE:  If you are asking why am I reviewing a movie when I actually said that I'm not into movies. That's because...I'm random. Bear with it. :)

When reading the title, it may sound like a spin-off of the Hong sister's My Girlfriend is a Gumiho Korean drama. No, it's not a spin-off and yes, the theme is of the same kind: romance between a human and a non-human. It's a Japanese movie directed by the same director of the famous Korean movies:  "My Sassy Girl" and "Windstruck".

Synopsis:
One day, a beautiful cyborg girl appears in Jiro's dull university student life who exactly looks like his ideal girl. She was sent to him from the future in order for him to correct some things in his life and to protect him from a great future disaster. As they lived together, he started to have feelings for her, however, she can not feel anything for him, since she is not human.

Trailer:

Okay the synopsis sounds like a storyline of a newly produced ecchi anime. However, how odd it may sound like, it's far from it. It may look like a spin-off of Yu Watase's Zettai Kareshi (Absolute Boyfriend), but that's not it as well. I'm not really the romance genre movie watcher, so this is a rare watch for me. The reason why I watched this movie is actually because of Keisuke Koide and Ayase Haruka. They are both great actors especially in the drama Jin. Weirdly, they acted as siblings in the drama so when I first watched the trailer, my eyes were screaming incest. BUT that's not the point. Both of them are also good as an on-screen couple.I'll try my best to review it without giving out too much spoilers.

Story:
The plot line is cliche, but not in a bad way. It may seem predictable, but it is moving. I remember the thoughts of Shin min-ah's character in  My Girlfriend is a Gumiho about the love stories of humans and non humans: "Why is it everyone dies or vanishes? Won't they deserve to be happy in the end?" Well, come to think of it, this thought also applies to Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid. It has become somewhat generic.

Most of the time, people are confused with this movie. To make a clarification, the movie shows three stories.: the story of Jiro, the story of the cyborg girl and the story of the girl from the future. In every story, it shows how things came to be. If you are able to patch up the three stories and  you are able to see how the characters corrected the occurrences, then you're good to go.

As you watch the film, you'll see how Jiro falls in love with the cyborg and his dilemma in falling for someone who cannot respond to his feelings (somewhat like an unrequited love). The more he stays with her, the paradox of falling in love with a cyborg becomes apparent. She can't feel his heart  and she cannot feel anything for him. At first, the story comes off as lighthearted and fun, but towards the end, the movie shows deeper emotions and becomes poignant. Most of the time, this kind of stories end up with a sad ending. However, this movie has a good twist. If you don't want to have a broken heart in watching movies, then try this one.

Soundtrack:
I have to say, the soundtrack is good. The songs are moving and beautiful. The video above is an example and it is one of my favorite insert songs out of the movie. If you like soothing music, then I recommend this movie's soundtrack.

Actors:
It's like a seeing a deja vu if you watched Jin. It's funny seeing this list of good actors from Jin acting in this kind of movie. It looks like Jin became their  on-screen reunion. Hahaha~

Keisuke Koide as Masumi in Nodame Cantabile
I've known Keisuke Koide for sometime now. Who would have thought he was the gay guy in Nodame Cantabile? hahaha One of my first movies of him was Ai no Mieru. It was a movie about a blind couple and he was paired up with Aya Ueto (as her blind musician husband). In Jin, he played a noble vassal of the Tokugawa shogunate, Kyotaro Tachibana. Looking at his roles, he was never in the same type of character. He's a good actor with a wide acting range.

Ayase Haruka as Ichi, Zatoichi's daughter
Ayase Haruka was an actress I've known when I was in High School through the movie Ichi. Is it a coincidence that she also played a blind musician (slash swordsman)? Then I was reintroduced to her this year through Mr. Brain. In Jin, she played a samurai princess turned female doctor, Saki Tachibana, the sister of Kyotaro Tachibana played by Keisuke Koide. She recently starred in several movies and now, she's one of the A-list actresses of Japan. She's a very versatile actress, and a very good one too.

Cinematography:
For a romance genre movie, the effects are really good. The CG and special effects are quite believable though it may not be the same as Transformers, since it doesn't have the same budget. :P
Rating:
I'll rate it 4 stars out of 5 (I might be bias). It may have been predictable, but the story won't disappoint you. I recommend this movie for those who like romance and don't want a tragic ending. Overall, this movie is a good watch for both hopeless romantics and for non-romantics like me.
